MIBOR Advocates For Homeowners All Year Long

A look back at MIBOR’s efforts this year to protect homeownership rights through advocacy and governmental affairs.

Homeownership is an evergreen issue that informs the basis of real estate advocacy efforts not just during election periods, but all year long.

Since 1912, the MIBOR REALTOR® Association has represented Central Indiana REALTORS® and the interests of home buyers and sellers who place their trust in the services of our members. In addition to guiding clients through some of the Indianapolis Child Advocates biggest financial transactions of their lives, MIBOR also takes an active role in working to advance public policies and support elected officials who are dedicated to building strong communities, protecting private property interests and promoting a vibrant local housing market.

How MIBOR Makes a Difference Locally

Marking its 50th-anniversary last year, MIBOR’s non-partisan REALTOR® Political Action Committee (RPAC) gives its grassroots network of members avenues through which to vote, Indianapolis neighborhood advocates act and invest across the greater Central Indiana service region on behalf of homeownership issues that impact quality of life and property values.

Local RPAC participants have served on task forces to permanently cap property taxes, support school referendums and infrastructure policy, pass improved options for condo financing and defeat a local permit fee proposal for placement of real estate signage. Ongoing efforts strive to address short-term rental regulations, landlord registries, illegal sign ordinances, private property ownership rights preservation and much more.

Backing officials and candidates who care

MIBOR provides support for elected officials by educating members, homeowners and the public in order to create dialogue and generate solutions to problems facing home and property owners.

“We have more than 350 elected officials within our 12-county jurisdiction, and we are strong partners for them,” says Lacey Everett, MIBOR Director of Political Affairs and Engagement. Child Advocates Indianapolis jobs“It’s important that we maintain those relationships so that when issues do arise, we have a direct line of communication. It’s a two-way street. We want to be a resource, but we also want them to hear us out on our issues and challenges we face.”

The Indiana Association of REALTORS® vets and works with candidates in statewide elections, while MIBOR RPAC builds relationships and works on the city and county level within the Central Indiana MIBOR region. Through questionnaires and a robust interview process, the RPAC Trustees determine which candidates’ platforms are most in line with MIBOR values that aim to further homeownership and protect real estate property owner rights.

Advocacy at the national level

The National Association of REALTORS® represents more than 1.5 million members fighting for the interests of 75 million homeowners across the country. Victim advocates indianapolis Beyond working collaboratively with local and state elected officials and political candidates, Federal RPAC representatives strive to foster strong relationships between the National Association of REALTORS® and members of Congress to support laws and regulations amenable to real estate and homeownership.

“Lobbyists at the national level are working to ensure we maintain a favorable atmosphere in which to purchase a home,” Everett says. “The real estate industry makes up about 17% of the total economy, so the fact that our business is helping to lead the national recovery is a huge talking point. Indianapolis real estate advocates when we go to Washington to meet with members of Congress, they really listen closely to what we have to say.”

Getting out the vote

MIBOR members make their voices — and yours — heard by voting consistently and in great numbers. Patient Advocates Indianapolis Nationwide, nearly 85% of REALTORS® are registered to vote; locally, the number rises to 91.7% of the MIBOR membership. Many members also exercise their civic duty by volunteering at the polls during elections. Some even choose to run for office themselves.

“In this uncertain time period, the entire MIBOR organization is working hard to make sure the real estate industry stays stable and strong to meet consumer demand and advocate on behalf of homeowners,” Everett summarizes. “We’ll continue to do everything we can to support them.”

Whether it’s advocating at local, state and national levels; supporting issues that affect your quality of life; or voting and volunteering at the polls, MIBOR members never stop working in the interests of homeowners.
